Made Iwan Darmawan was born in Bali. He worked for 13 years as a journalist, photographer and editor for the Bali Post. Iwan had started his education at the Medical Faculty of Udayana University (1987) and then at the Faculty of Film and Television at the Jakarta Art Institute (1992). His essays and short stories have been published in Jakarta-Jakarta, Humour Magazine, Voice of Reform, Koran Tempo, and Bali Post.
Two of his short stories, "Ritus Legong" and "Sulandri" won awards from Femina magazine. As a photographer, Iwan had a solo exhibition in 2000 with the theme “Bali with Other Words” and in 2003 with “Fighting with a Conscience”. Iwan now works as a writing & photography trainer, and is a judge in photography competitions. His debut novel Ayu Manda was published in early 2010. Its haunting depiction of a female Balinese dancer's struggle against new esthetic, tourism, sexuality and the brutal aftermath of a failed communist's coup in mid-1960 has won the novel many praises.
